Lost Girl

“Lost Girl” is one of the best TV series on the air since 2010 in Canada and this year in the United States. This series is a relatively new addition to the increasingly popular genre of supernatural crime drama, a genre first made popular in the 1990s by shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”. It’s series like “Lost Girl”, however, that show us how far supernatural drama television has come since “Buffy”. This series features the life of a succubus named “Bo” who is struggling as she learns to control her powers and find her place in the paranormal world...

Grimm

Grimm, a supernatural crime thriller series by the same producers that brought us classics such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”, is the best TV series on the air right now. The show premiered in 2012 and its second season that began in August. The show is essentially a police drama, but with a twist—in the world of the series, fairy tale creatures exist. The series title is a reference to the fairy tale authors “The Brothers Grimm”, and many episodes feature plots that are loosely based on Grimms’ fairytales. However, episodes also feature various beings and legends that do not originate from the brothers Grimm. The main character is Nick Burkhardt, a Homicide Detective played by newcomer David Guintoli...

Game of Thrones

With a riveting storyline, high-adrenaline action, and a sexy cast, “Game of Thrones” is easily one of the best TV series currently on the air. This genre-bending show, a historical action fantasy which hints of drama, comedy, and romance, is based on the successful novel series by George R. R. Martin. Although fantasy has not generally been popular in the main-stream media in the recent past, this show is dramatically altering that trend. The main plot centers particularly around members of the Stark family, as well as six other noble families, who are all competing to gain control of “the Iron Throne” which would make them the rulers of their fictional known world...

Falling Skies

As the best series on television, “Falling Skies” is the crown of the science fiction post-apocalyptic drama genre since 2011. Due to mainstream popularity and positive critical reception, a third season set to premier some time in 2013. 5.9 million viewers watched the season premier, which made it the biggest television series launch of the year. The show is created by Steven Speilberg, master of science fiction, and Robert Rodat, the film writer for Saving Private Ryan. The plot begins six months after a devastating alien attack on the earth and centers around a group of humans that has somehow managed to survive. The main character of the show is Tom Mason, a former Boston University professor of History portrayed by Noah Wyle (made famous by his role as Dr. John Carter in E.R.)...

Dexter

“Dexter”, which first aired to critical acclaim in 2006, is still one of the best TV series and remains to this day the most watched series on Showtime ever. The first season of the series is based on the novel “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” by Jeff Lindsay, which centers on seemingly normal blood-splatter detective Dexter Morgan. Morgan is a somewhat awkward and nerdy yet friendly team member of the Miami Metro Police Department. However, Dexter also has a dark secret: he is an experienced and active serial killer. From a young age, Dexter had morbid and intense urges to kill that resulted from a bloody and traumatic scene witnessed as a mere three-year-old...

Breaking Bad

“Breaking Bad” is a popular drama television series that first aired in 2008 and has produced four (and a half) successful seasons so far. One of the things that makes this series so popular (and easily one of the best TV shows on the air during the past few years) is that simply put, it’s a smart show.  As a result, this series has received mainstream and critical attention, garnering several awards, including seven Emmys, as well as two Golden Globe nominations and three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for the male lead, Bryan Cranston. Set and filmed on location in Albuquerque, New Mexico, “Breaking Bad” focuses on the life of a regular high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (Cranston)...

Battlestar Galactica

“Battlestar Galactica” one of the best TV series in the history of the military science fiction genre, went on the air in 2004 and is a remake of sorts of the original series from 1978. The 2004 Battlestar Galactica began as a miniseries but was so popular that the Sci-Fi channel decided to make it a regular series. Personally, I much prefer this 2004 edition, which sadly ended in 2009. Fortunately, a continuation of the series called “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome” is set to air in just a few short months in February of 2013. Each Battlestar Galactica series operates on the same classic premise that, in a future far, far away, somewhere off in the distant reaches of the galaxy, humans have colonized a clustering of planets referred to as “The Twelve Colonies”...

Arrow

“Arrow” is a US produced superhero mystery-drama that is easily the best TV series of 2012. The main plot focuses on the fictional character of “ Green Arrow”, a creation of the action powerhouse DC Comics. It aired in North America on The CW, a channel that was home to another superhero drama series known as “Smallville”, which focused on the adolescent life of Superman. However, with a sharper cast and more intelligent script, “Arrow” is a huge step forward from “Smallville”. While this series will feature appearances by other classic DC characters, the more obscure narrative of Arrow provides viewers with a superhero perspective that hasn’t been seen before...
